The most famous temples in Hanoi



In 1942, the pagoda was rebuilt like present architecture and furniture decoration. It has large architecture scale with three-roof gate and bell tower in the middle. In 1943, the pagoda become the headquarters of central North Vietnamese Buddhist Association

The temple of Literature- Van Mieu- Quoc Tu Giam
The temple of Literature
Van Mieu- Quoc Tu Giamiss a famous historical and cultural relic consisting of the Temple of Literature and the Vietnam’s first university. The Temple of literature was built in 1070 in honour of Confucius, his followers, and Chu Van An, a moral figure in Vietnamese education.

Quan Su pagoda
Quan Su pagoda is located at 72 Quan Su street, Tran Hung dao ward, Hoan Hiem district.

The next place is wide courtyard.  Walking up 11steps to the main hall which is square with corridors surround, electric decorated stately Buddha, the statues are quite large and splendid gilded, inside the church Three Buddha in the three highest levels.

The people come always here on the full moon day, first day, holidays, special day to pray healthy and happiness for their family.

Tran Quoc pagoda
Tran Quoc pagoda is one of the oldest pagoda of Vietnam, next to West lake. The pagoda was built in Ly Nam De king period ( 541- 547) next to Red river. Then, in 1615, it was transferred to the present place. The pagoda has many valuable Buddha statues.

Kim Lien pagoda
The pagoda was built on Nghi Tam commune, next to the bank of West lake. The pagoda was appeared in XVII century. According to the legend, the pagoda had name as “Dai Bi” which was built in 1631. After seven years, the local people contributed to extend the pagoda. Until 1771, Trinh king transferred Bao Lam pagoda to the west and renamed as Kim Lien pagoda.

One pillar pagoda
The original name of the One pillar Pagoda was Dien Huu pagoda, which literally means “long lasting happiness and good luck”. The pagoda is located on Ong Ich Khiem street, in the western part of the Thang Long citadel, and near Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum.

 According to legend, ageing Emperor Ly Thai Tong, who had no children, often went to pagodas to pray to Buddha for a son. One night, he dreamed that he was granted a private audience with Buddha. Buddha, who was seated on a lotus flower in a square-shaped lotus pond on the western side of Thang Long citadel, gave the king a baby boy. Later, the queen gave the birth to a male child, the Emperor ordered the pagoda construction of a pagoda supported by only one pillar to resemble the lotus seat of his dream in the honour of Buddha. Therefore,  lotus flower is considered the symbol of the temple, which symbolizes much flavour essence beauty, intellectual perception. Head of one pillar pagoda was castled by reinforced concrete. Around the temple is a square lake called Lake Longyan ( Dragon eye lake).

Ngoc Son temple
Hoan Kiem lake is considered the most beautiful lake in the city when Ngoc Son temple was built on Ngoc Islet, in the northern part of the lake during the 19th century. It was dedicated to Van Xuong, once considered as the brightest star in Vietnamese literary and intellectual circles, and Tran Hung Dao, the national hero who led the Vietnamese people to victory over Mongo
