5 Places to Go or Things to Do in Vietnam

Hanoi

The bustling capital city of Hanoi is a blend of market and motorbikes, art museums and French cuisine. Stroll the nearly 1,000-year-old Old Quarter, searching for the perfect memento, or stop in a cafe for milky-sweet Vietnamese coffee and a pastry. At the ho chi minh mausoleum complex, visit the tomb of "Uncle Ho" and other state officials before perusing Hanoi's art galleries: Apricot Gallery and Mai Tai Gallery in the Old Quarter and Art Vietnam Gallery in the West Lake area.

Tomb of Tu Duc

In Duong Xuan Thuong village, 8 km from Hue City, lies one of Vietnam's premier examples of Nguyen dynasty royal architecture. The site has two parts: the temple area and the tomb area. In the temple area, visitors can enjoy the peacefulness of Luu Khiem Lake and its surrounding gardens before exploring Hoa Khiem Palace, Luong Khiem Palace and On Khiem Palace, resting places for members of the royal family. The tomb area is a sloping necropolis dedicated to deceased civilians and members of the military.

Phong Nha Caves

UNESCO World Heritage site Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, located in the Quang Binh province, is one of the two largest limestone deposit areas in the world. The karst landscape of the park was shaped over the course of 400 million years by slowly dissolving bedrock, creating a number of caves and grottoes. Explore the cave system, which includes caves called "Fairy Caves," "The Buddha" and "The Lion," with a local eco-tourism guide.

Nha Trang Beaches

The four-mile-long Nha Trang beach is lined with spa hotels, restaurants, nightlife and sporting opportunities, in addition to the sandy shores and clean water of the beach itself. Sunbathing is popular at the beach; you can rent a sunbed while traveling vendors offer tropical drinks and fresh fruit. For more active pursuits, snorkel or dive the coral reefs just offshore, or rent a board and go windsurfing. When the sun goes down, Tran Phu Street is home to a water and amusement park, food stalls and a night market.

Ho Chi Minh Trail

History buffs will want to visit one of the most storied areas in modern Vietnam: the Ho Cho Minh Trail. The well-hidden jungle trails and paths were used as a supply route by villagers and guerrillas during the war. Begin at the Ho Chi Minh Trail Museum in the outskirts of Hanoi, then consider booking a single or multi-day walking, bus or motorcycle tour traveling parallel to parts of the original trail. You may also want to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, an underground battlefield in Ho Chi Minh City.
