Houses for rent

As an alternative to condos you may rent a house. Many Vietnamese families have houses for rent at reasonable prices. Be sure, the house is well guarded to avoid burglaries (unsufficiently guarded houses with foreigners are popular targets for burglars). Condo buildings usually offer 24-hour-security and condos like those at Huong's have, in addition, each its own safety box.

The traditional costume of Vietnamese women

The Viet clothes are diverse and differ by regions.
One of the most popular and casual clothes that northern rural women wore until the early 20th century was Ao tu than, the four-panel traditional dress. The top is a four part flowing tunic. The 2 front panels are tied together by a cloth belt without buttons, showing the Vietnamese brasserie or Yem, which is a piece of cloth covering a woman’s chest. An angle was cut to the neck and had two strings attached to fix it to the body. Yem, usually made of white silk, helps show a women’s attractiveness by highlighting the tapered shoulders and bee-shaped waist. Pham Bich Hang of the Vietnam Women’s Museum says:“The four-panel traditional dress with the front part attached together by a colorful silk belt creates charm and gracefulness. The dress always goes with a Vietnamese brasserie, a kerchief tired in a triangle on the forehead and flat palm hat with fringes. Such attire has always been worn by artists who perform Quan Ho folk singing”.

Ao ba ba, the loose-fitting blouse is associated with southern women. Female farmers in the Mekong river delta used to wear a black blouse for their work in the field. The blouse is split on both sides along the hip and the two flaps form big outer pockets, making it convenient for wearers. Hang told VOV: “The designs of these loose-fitting blouses fit the southern environment. Local farmers usually wear black or brown blouses which are very convenient. Ao ba ba is worn with the Khan ran, a striped scarf, typifying Vietnamese women in the southern delta region”.
Today, Ao ba ba has been modified into a close-fitting blouse with a collar. In the 1970s, the sleeves and shoulders of the blouse were seamless while the flaps were separated from the sleeves and shoulders. The sleeves were longer and flared. Sometimes, the outer pockets were removed, making the top look gentler.

The most famous traditional attire of the Vietnamese women is the ao dai, a long dress. It is designed to be close-fitting with a high collar. The front and back flaps flow from collar to knees in a long covering with loose trousers.
Le Thi Luyen, owner of the Vinh Trach shop at 23 Luong Van Can street, Hanoi, has 60-year experience in tailoring ao dai: “Formerly, the sleeves and shoulders adjoined each other. The collar was about 3cm, not as high as it is now. Now ao dai is made in the raglan style, which is simpler. Ao dai beautifies femininity”.
Ao dai is made of different materials and decorated with embroideries or other hand made patterns. Pham Bich Hang says: “Ao dai symbolizes the cultural essence of the Vietnamese nation. Painter Cat Tuong has been a pioneer in modifying the dress. Despite many modifications, ao dai retains its traditional features and elevates the gentle beauties of the Viet women”.

They’ll charge you about $10 US for a day excursion to the main attractions around Dalat which will probably include a visit to Chicken Village, a Koho minority people’s village where a huge concrete chicken stands above the wooden houses. From here most excursions continue on to visit a silk factory where you can watch the whole process of producing silk scarves, then proceed to the impressive Elephant waterfalls. Similar routes covering other waterfalls and alternative craft industry visits may be offered.

Within Dalat itself it’s difficult to do the main sightseeing on foot as the main sights lie well away from one another and at this altitude and with some steep hills around you’d be better off getting around on the back of a motorbike or taking one of the daily sightseeing tours offered by Sinh Cafe or other local operators.

A landscape sightseeing tour takes you a little further out of town and the Langbiang Mountain hiking tour takes you to a traditional Lat village by four wheel drive from where you walk the steep hill to the top of the mountain for stunning views over Dalat and beyond. No matter what they tell you in the office, a good level of fitness is recommended for this climb.

5 Places to Go or Things to Do in Vietnam

Hanoi

The bustling capital city of Hanoi is a blend of market and motorbikes, art museums and French cuisine. Stroll the nearly 1,000-year-old Old Quarter, searching for the perfect memento, or stop in a cafe for milky-sweet Vietnamese coffee and a pastry. At the ho chi minh mausoleum complex, visit the tomb of "Uncle Ho" and other state officials before perusing Hanoi's art galleries: Apricot Gallery and Mai Tai Gallery in the Old Quarter and Art Vietnam Gallery in the West Lake area.

Tomb of Tu Duc

In Duong Xuan Thuong village, 8 km from Hue City, lies one of Vietnam's premier examples of Nguyen dynasty royal architecture. The site has two parts: the temple area and the tomb area. In the temple area, visitors can enjoy the peacefulness of Luu Khiem Lake and its surrounding gardens before exploring Hoa Khiem Palace, Luong Khiem Palace and On Khiem Palace, resting places for members of the royal family. The tomb area is a sloping necropolis dedicated to deceased civilians and members of the military.

Phong Nha Caves

UNESCO World Heritage site Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, located in the Quang Binh province, is one of the two largest limestone deposit areas in the world. The karst landscape of the park was shaped over the course of 400 million years by slowly dissolving bedrock, creating a number of caves and grottoes. Explore the cave system, which includes caves called "Fairy Caves," "The Buddha" and "The Lion," with a local eco-tourism guide.

Nha Trang Beaches

The four-mile-long Nha Trang beach is lined with spa hotels, restaurants, nightlife and sporting opportunities, in addition to the sandy shores and clean water of the beach itself. Sunbathing is popular at the beach; you can rent a sunbed while traveling vendors offer tropical drinks and fresh fruit. For more active pursuits, snorkel or dive the coral reefs just offshore, or rent a board and go windsurfing. When the sun goes down, Tran Phu Street is home to a water and amusement park, food stalls and a night market.

Ho Chi Minh Trail

History buffs will want to visit one of the most storied areas in modern Vietnam: the Ho Cho Minh Trail. The well-hidden jungle trails and paths were used as a supply route by villagers and guerrillas during the war. Begin at the Ho Chi Minh Trail Museum in the outskirts of Hanoi, then consider booking a single or multi-day walking, bus or motorcycle tour traveling parallel to parts of the original trail. You may also want to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, an underground battlefield in Ho Chi Minh City.

Temple of Literature Van mieu, Hanoi vietnam

Van Mieu, the temple of literature, is Hanoi's oldest university. Or rather: it was a university. Founded in 1070 (!) and dedicated to Confucius, Van Mieu was the main centre of education for Vietnam mandarins who were educated there for several centuries. In the 15th century, Emperor Le Thanh Tong declared that stelae should be placed for everybody being conferred a doctorate. Therefore you now see 82 stelae with the inscriptions of 1304 doctor laureates in the temple, all of which are placed on the back of a tortoise. In Vietnamese mythology, the tortoise, the unicorn, the dragon and the phoenix are holy animals. It is said that the placement of stelae signifies "everlasting respect to talent".

>> Others Topics: the top things to do in vietnam

Nowadays, Van Mieu is above all an oasis of tranquility amidst Hanoi's neverending traffic chaos. Although it is surrounded by three highly frequented main roads, you can enjoy a break at Van Mieu without even noticing that there are thousands of motorbikes rushing by just behind the walls of the temple.

Furthermore, Van Mieu is architecturally very interesting. In the five yards of Van Mieu you can experience different stages of Vietnamese architecture. There are for instance the two horse dismounting stelae in front of the temple where those who wanted to enter the temple had to dismount their horse. Between the first and the second yard, you can marvel at the beautiful Great Middle Gate. In the third yard, the 82 stelae surround the Well of Heavenly Clarity. The fourth yard comes up with the Courtyard of the Sage - it is here where Confucius and other sages are worshipped. In the fifth yard you can see what was the study room some centuries ago. A model of the temple and several old photographs are displayed in the building at the very end of the yards.

The Temple of Literature: Van mieu (Hanoi)

Located in the Dong Da section of Hanoi, Van Mieu, or the temple of literature, is the oldest school in Vietnam, giving it the distinction of being the most significant temple in both Hanoi and Vietnam. It is representative of Confucian ways of thought and behavior, and is a historical and cultural relic.

According to historical records, during the 8th lunar month of the Canh Tuat Year (1070), King Ly Thanh Tong erected several important monuments, including temple of literature introductionand the carvings of Confucius, Chu Cong, four disciples, and 72 other scholars who were considered to be model Confucians. Ceremonies were dedicated to them once every season of the year. The Crown Prince has traditionally been educated here. In 1076, Vietnam's first university, Quoc Tu (National University), was established under the direction of King Ly Nhan Tong near Van Mieu for the purpose of instructing the children of Mandarins, the aristocrats, and the brightest commoners. During its more than 700 years of instruction (1076-1779), Quoc Tu Giam educated thousands of talented men for Vietnam. Among the most notable are the mathematician Luong The Vinh, the historian Ngo Sy Lien, the encyclopedist Ly Don, and the politician-diplomat Ngo Thi Nham.

After more than 900 years of existence, repairs and renovations, Quoc Tu Giam is still an example of well-preserved traditional Vietnamese architecture. Also preserved within these confines are valued relics representing the Millenary civilization, such as stelae with inscriptions of the names of distinguished scholars, the Well of Heavenly Clarity (Thien Quang Tinh), the pavilion in dedication of the Constellation of Literature (Khue Van Cac), the statue of Confucius, the Great House of Ceremonies, the ancient wall, kowtow portico and the sanctuary, the stone dragons, and the ink stone stands. Secular trees, such as the banyan and frangipani, were present during literary meetings, festivals and examinations that occurred during the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties. They continue to flourish.

Particularly impressive is the collection of 82 stone stelae which rest upon large stone tortoises. They were created between 1484 and 1780 and are engraved with the names, places of birth and achievements of the 1,306 doctor laureates that received their degrees during this time span. These stelae were erected to encourage learning and bestow honor on the talented men who assisted the Kings in defending the country.

An important historical and cultural vestige of Vietnam, Van Mieu and Quoc Tu Giam are currently under repair to restore their original appearance.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Dos and Don't's

A large area is devoted to Ho Chi Minh

In the centre of Hanoi, a large area is devoted to Ho chi minh mausoleum complex. The centrepiece is a large mausoleum where his embalmed body lies in a bier inside a glass case. Visitors must join a queue and file through the room without stopping. No photography is allowed, and all personal possessions must be left outside (provision is made for this).

It’s a macabre experience, but most visitors foreign seem to find strangely moving, perhaps due to the undisguised reverence of the Vietnamese people present.

The building was erected with assistance from the USSR, and is a good example of Soviet architecture of the period. It’s guarded by an honour guard of Vietnamese soldiers in immaculate white dress uniforms who march around the building at regular intervals.

It is open from 08.00 to 11.00 from Tuesday to Thursday, and over the weekends
In fact, Uncle Ho, as he is affectionately known in Vietnam, left directions for his cremation in his will. However, at the time of his death in 1969, the year after the Tet Offensive, the war was still raging and morale was low. Communist Party chiefs recognised his iconic status and overrode his wishes, probably a pragmatically wise decision, but ethically reprehensive.
The embalming process was undertaken by Russian experts – each year in early autumn, his body is flown to Moscow for three months for maintenance.

The grandeur of the mausoleum is a strange contrast to the simple stilt house where Ho Chi Minh lived and worked. Built in the style of ethnic minority dwellings, it overlooks a large carp pond and is a calm sanctuary. Visitors can look through the windows to see the austere furnishings and his few personal possessions. On his desk each day is a vase of his favourite blossoms, hoa hue trang, a sweetly scented flower rather like a tall white bluebell.

Nearby is the magnificent Presidential Palace, once the palace of the Governor-General of Indochina during the colonial period. Unfortunately, it’s not open to the public.

In the opposite direction, the Ho Chi Minh Museum provides a comprehensive overview of the man’s life and work and his vision of peace and happiness. It’s informative, but understandably overlooks some of the more risqué episodes in his life. Close by, the famous One Pillar Pagoda is worth a passing look. Although it’s one of the symbols of Hanoi, it’s something of a disappointment as it’s a modern replica.

The Ho Chi Minh Museum is open from 08.00 to 11.00 and from 13.30 to 16.30 daily.

A short walk across Da Dinh Square directly in front of the mausoleum takes you past the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a stunningly beautiful monument especially when illuminated at night. From there, another short walk takes you to the Hanoi Citadel.

The site of the ancient Hanoi Citadel has been occupied by the Army for many years. It is now beginning to be turned over to the Hanoi City authorities in stages. So far, a couple of impressive pagodas have been restored and made accessible. Not far away, a major excavation on the site of what will be the new National Assembly building has revealed the remains of a substantial palace complex dating from the Ly Dynasty that ruled about a millennium ago. The findings have transformed knowledge about the early history of Vietnam and its links to China.

It has recently been announced that the Army will soon hand over the remains of the Citadel’s Forbidden City to the Hanoi’s People’s Committee. After restoration work, this too will be open to visitors.

Top 12 Things to Do in Dalat, Vietnam

Top things to do in Dalat, Vietnam. View point

1. Easy Riders

The first thing on my list of 12 top vietnam things to do is to take an Dalat Easy Riders tour. Actually, if it wasn’t for this, the rest of these things may not even be on this list, and because of that, it was also my favorite of my top things to do in Dalat, Vietnam.

I have heard a lot about Easy Riders, so thought I should try it for myself. The great thing about it is it is not a tour group. Just you and the driver. They had a bunch of options, but by the end of it all I just said I’d give him 400,000 dong for the day to take me to his favorite destinations.

Note: There is the official Easy Riders which is all over Vietnam. Many places also have their local ‘rip off’ versions e.g. Dalat Easy Riders. In my opinion, unless you are doing a cross country tour e.g. Hanoi to HCMC, then go with one of the local Easy Rider ‘rip offs’ e.g. Dalat Easy Riders. They are much more knowledgeable about the local area, and also more than likely, owned by Vietnamese.

2. Go to the Market

That evening I went for a walk into town around the market. Dalat is cool mountain weather and has a vibrant market place with a few street foods I haven’t seen before. I tried a few. Nice, but still not as good as Hue or Hanoi (in my opinion).

3. Eat at Le Voy

I got dinner at a place recommended by the Dalat Easy Rider Guide (Chilli), called Le Voy. Had Roast Chicken Rice. Very good and reasonably priced (40,000 vnd). It was just up the round from the hotel at the round about. People know it, just ask someone where Le Voy is.

4. See the Vegetable Plantations

My Dalat Easy Riders tour started at 0900 and was a full day for $20usd, which includes all (well most) entry fees. I chose a countryside tour of Dalat. First stop was at a viewpoint, which I guess is the first stop for everyone. Next was another viewpoint with a ten minute hike up. I like hiking and the guide just points you in the right direction and you take yourself which was good.

Apparently, Dalat is famous for growing vegetables. so the view points overlooked these things.

5. Coffee Plantation

Third stop was the coffee plantation. Good thing about tours is that they give you information also. Dalat is the 2nd biggest exporter of coffee in the world (according to my guide). First is Brazil, third is Colombia.

In Dalat they make Weasel coffee. Weasels eat the coffee beans, shit it out, then humans drink it.

6. Rice Wine

Then we went to where they make rice wine. Not a factory, just out the back of some ones property, whom also sold coffee. Chilli explained the process and then I got a shot of rice wine afterwards. Much nicer than I’ve tasted before, I guess because it had not been mixed down.

Best Places to Visit and things to do in vietnam

Ha Long Bay is in northeast Vietnam and is known for its countless limestone formations, or karsts, that dot the bay. Most people explore the bay through single day or multi-day cruises on junk boats. After some Trip Advisor research, we booked a cruise through Pelican Cruise. The rooms were nicely furnished and my friend and I joked that one day, we would be able to think of this as “normal”. For now though, we were super excited about how plush the bed was and how cool it was that we had our own shower in our room. The cruise also offered kayaking, tai chi with the sunrise, cave excursions and had a sundeck bar where you could buy 2 for 1 drinks until 7:30 pm. You also visit a fishing village and meet the fisherwomen, who take you for a ride through the bay on their expertly balanced basket boats. Halong bay is the best things to do in vietnam

On the cruise itself, we brought books to read but after seeing the scenery around me, I just gave up. It was too beautiful and unlike anything I had ever seen before. If you’re planning on making this trip, I highly recommend booking Pelican. The junk that we went on was nicely maintained, the food was pretty good and was able to accommodate my vegetarian friend’s food requests, and the crew was extremely friendly and polite.

Biking (Hoi An, Vietnam)
Hoi An is a coastal town located in central Vietnam. Its relaxed pace offered a nice respite from the typical frenzy found in other Vietnamese cities such as Vietnam hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. As you walk around the town, you will find plenty of tailors who will offer to custom create suits or dresses for you. My friend ended up getting a cute dress from one of these stores and later, I wish I did too. In Hoi An, we stayed at Golden Bell Homestay, which offered free bike rentals. This was a popular method of travel among both locals and tourists. My friend and I each grabbed a bike and rode around town towards the beach. Along the way we saw some rice paddies and also ventured into one, only to later realize that the road abruptly ended in a narrow, unbikeable path. It was still fun though!
