Xe om (literally: vehicle embracing) is a motorbike that operates like a two-wheeled taxi with the driver and the passenger(s) sitting behind (with no or little luggage) while the passenger is holding or "embracing" the driver. The price should not be more than that of a cyclo, but the passenger should fix it beforehand. There are plenty of Xe Om drivers hanging around hotels, street corners, markets etc. We will start publishing updated xe om prices shortly.

Your first encounter with taxis in Vietnam before arriving in Nha Trang may be after landing in Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The taxi company which has an excellent record (with regards to overcharging and other customer complaints) there is Mai Linh whose taxis are white and green and whose taxi drivers always wear a green tie. Be wary of fake Mai Linh taxis using the same colours and a similar logo. Although the Mai Linh taxi company tries hard to prevent their drivers from cheating, it may occasionally happen that an individual driver misbehaves. Therefore write down the number of the taxi and get in touch with the taxi company if something unpleasant happened. The second best taxi company is Vinasun taxis which are okay but their drivers do not have the same city knowledge and the same customer service skills as those of Mai Linh. Among the rest of the taxi companies the black sheep seem to outnumber the white ones.
When you arrive at Cam Ranh airport, 30 km outside Nha Trang city, you can either purchase a ticket for 40,000 VND for a shuttle to take you to the old Nha Trang city airport from where you can catch a taxi to your hotel or you can purchase a taxi voucher for 290,000 VND taking you to your hotel or any other place you wish to go.
From there you can catch a taxi, bus, or Xe Om (motorbike taxi). Do not pay more regardless of what the driver is telling you unless you want to give him a tip. Do not accept your taxi pulling ahead or behind the entrace to your hotel as this is a warning sign that you are most likely cheated and that the driver is trying to prevent the receptionist or the hotel guard coming to your aid. Again, note down the taxi number plate before entering the taxi as this may deter potential trouble in the first place and it will help you dealing with the police and the taxi company in case trouble (including forgetting or losing something in the taxi) does occur.
Taxis in Nha Trang are equipped with meters and are, by Western standards, cheap. They are also a safe way to travel at night. Unlike in major cities dodgy taxis roaming the streets of Nha Trang are rare. Nevertheless, travel only with reputable and recommended taxis such as those of Mai Linh company.
Taxis are highly commission driven and they tend to take you as long and as far as they can to get the highest commission. Therefore, do not ask the driver vaguely to take you to a close beach as you may end up on a very far-away beach and do not request him to show you a nice restaurant as it may or may not be nice but certainly far away.
